My name is James Wen. I am your 2015 School Site Council Rep.
Recently, it has come to our attention that SFUSD will be making drastic changes to the District math program. They plan on having all entering SFUSD students take ALGEBRA 1. This means that students will NOT have the opportunity to PLACE OUT of Algebra 1. (See attached photo)
We feel this plan will not benefit the Lowell community because:
-over 70% of Lowell students place out of Algebra 1 therefore this plan will hold back the majority of Lowell students.
-students who wish to take AP Calc will have to take a COMBINED Algebra 2-PreCal class their junior year.
-AP Statistics will be a senior only class thus limiting the flexibility we have in choosing our classes
-AP Chemistry and the algebra based AP Physics courses would only be open to senior year enrollment due to the math requirements. The calculus-based AP Physics C would be DISCONTINUED. This would heavily limit the amount of advanced science courses we would be able to take. This is especially a concern due to the high demand for STEM jobs.
-this policy would DISCRIMINATE against SFUSD students coming to Lowell. Private school-educated students (or anyone transferring into the District) would still be allowed to take a placement test. This would mean they would have the opportunity to access higher level math/science courses earlier than anyone else. However, these students would ONLY be able to test into Geometry.
-no honors math.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT!
Your SSC members have prepared a petition asking that Lowell be exempted from the plan. We ask that you read it and sign it with your name and reg number. It should only take a few minutes at the max. Here is the link:
We also ask that you send this petition to all of your Lowell friends and share it on your social media.
There is also a Board meeting next Tuesday and we are looking for as many students to go to voice our opposition.
