Lowell Business and Economics is a discussion-based club which focuses on business economics, and the ways in which they relate to our everyday lives. Our meetings usually start with an introduction to a new concept or topic, followed by an open discussion on how the idea can be seen or applied in current situations. Tangents are welcome - in fact, we can’t seem to go a single meeting without them!
We often explore modern economic concepts through the lense of issues near and dear to us. In one of our more passionate discussions last year, we hashed out how Amazon is moving towards a monopoly, and how low prices now don’t necessarily translate to low prices in the future. Other hot topics have included: the effects of companies like Uber and Air BnB on taxi and hotel businesses, the importance of voting with your money, targeted advertisement, and the best way to start a business. We also learn about business and economics through guest speakers and mock stock investment competitions. In this coming year, we hope to add a component on making smart financial decisions and introduce mentoring programs with local business figures!
Everyone is welcome to join our club! Whether you are interested in a career in business and economics, you want to understand how Amazon’s success will affect your future, or you just want to learn about smart ways to invest in stocks for retirement, don’t be scared to stop by one of our meetings! (Also we have free food)
